Adam Zagajewski is a rapturous skeptic, an ecstatic ironist who, in moments of great attentivesness, fully divines, absorbs, and accepts the word, yet also teaches us to question everythink about it. His essays, like his poems, glow with a mysterious light, and I know of no writer, here or abroad, who so brilliantly illuminates the spaces between the imagination and history, the inner life of poetry and the external drift of the world itself.
