A self-made merchant can buy almost anything in Warsaw—except the woman whose world refuses to admit him.

Stanisław Wokulski has returned from exile and poverty with a fortune, a brilliant mind, and a dangerous hope. In Russian-ruled Warsaw, he builds a thriving shop, moves among aristocrats who need his money but despise his origins, and becomes consumed by Izabela Łęcka, a beautiful noblewoman raised to see men like him as useful, but never equal.

As Wokulski tries to cross the invisible border between commerce and birth, desire and dignity, Prus opens an entire society: drawing rooms and shop counters, ruined nobles and hungry students, political dreamers, social climbers, loyal friends, and people quietly crushed by a city obsessed with rank.

The Doll is a great Polish realist novel of unrequited love, class ambition, satire, and psychological conflict—part social panorama, part intimate portrait of a man who cannot decide whether he wants love, respect, science, or escape.
